Definition: The American Association for the Advancement of Upper Midwest Women (AAUW) is a women's advocacy organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota. AAUW was founded in 1904 as an umbrella organization for women's rights organizations located throughout the United States to advocate for issues related to labor and marriage. AAUW members were organized by the National Woman Suffrage Association (now known as Women's Equality Association) to help achieve voting rights for women in the U.S. through state suffrage legislation. AAUW is dedicated to promoting equality, education, health care access, and reproductive rights among women of all ages. It also works to support the advancement of other marginalized groups including African Americans, Native Americans, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. As an umbrella organization for many women's organizations located in different states across the United States, AAUW serves as a platform for advocacy within both state and national levels to promote policies and activities that benefit all women.
