Definition: The word "Abaco" is a name for an island located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, approximately 100 miles (160 km) east-northeast of Nassau, Bahamas and about 300 miles (480 km) southeast of Cuba. The name was first recorded as Abaco in the mid-16th century. Abaco is an archipelago of small islands located on a shallow continental shelf at an altitude of approximately 72 meters (240 feet). The island has a land mass of about 5 square kilometers (1.98 sq mi) and an area that is roughly the size of Texas. There are numerous smaller islands in the archipelago. The Abaco Islands contain several types of coral reefs, including the Great Abaco Reef and the Little Abaco Reef. The abalone found on the island is considered a delicacy by many Bahamians and is often used as an ingredient in dishes such as fish stew.
