Definition: The word "Algren" is a Germanic word meaning "to be at ease, to relax." It appears in many biblical references where it describes how God's people should act when faced with difficulties. In the Hebrew Bible (Hebrew Scriptures) there are two instances that refer to this concept. In Genesis 39:5-16, Jacob asks God to bring him from his father's household (the land of Egypt). When he hears a man speak harshly against him and is threatened by death, God tells him to "be at ease, to relax." This is a metaphorical reference to the idea that one should be able to rest in peace with their thoughts and actions. In Hebrews 13:2-6, Paul is describing the kind of behavior he wishes for his people to exhibit. He writes, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it was delivered me by Christ Jesus, to reveal its power through it."
