Definition: Berkshire, literally translated as "the countryside", refers to an area in northern North America that lies along the eastern border of the United States. It comprises all or part of 41 states (including Alaska), plus a number of territories, including two-thirds of the United States' total land area. In the southern part of the state, a great deal of land is designated as "coastal" and is called the "outer coasts"; in contrast, most of the interior of the state is an inland area known as the "borders".
