Definition: The term "acropodia" describes a type of cell found in aquatic animals (such as fish, sea urchins) that has a membrane between its nucleus and cytoplasm. This membrane is typically more opaque than the surrounding water. In simpler terms, an acropodyt is a very transparent cell membrane that surrounds the nuclear body within a hollow, somewhat translucent cavity called the nucleus cavity. The nuclear matter is contained in the cavity while the cytoplasm and other contents of the acropodyt are dispersed throughout the space between it. Acropodia may also be found in some other types of animals. For example, they are found in the stomach lining of marine animals like sea urchins, as well as in the digestive tracts of certain mammals and birds (like rats and birds).
