Definition: The term 'acrossomes', also called 'protoplasmas', refers to the cells in which genetic material, including DNA, is distributed and organized before cell division. The word "acrossome" means to cross over or come into contact with a previous copy of itself. For example, a bacterium that has been crossed over from a different species would have its own set of chromosomes. This process occurs during prokaryotic genetic replication. In the case of eukaryotes, the acrosomes divide and exchange their DNA, which is then shared by all the cells within an organism. Acro means "across" in Greek and cosm means "world". So acrossomes refers to a set of cells that have been divided into equal parts or have come into contact with previous copies of themselves.
