Definition: In biology, actin is a protein molecule that is involved in cell motility. The word 'actiniform' refers to organisms with a simple cell wall made up of an intercalated matrix. The cell membrane and plasma membrane are also composed of these actin filaments which carry out the necessary cellular functions such as the transport of substances, maintaining homeostasis, and carrying out metabolic reactions (as in the presence of other proteins). These cells can be found in different parts of the body including skeletal muscles, nervous systems, and epithelial organs.
