Definition: Actinogamic, a term used to denote an organism that has two pairs of actin fibers. The human body contains multiple muscles in the skeletal system (e.g., back, shoulder, chest). These muscle fibers contain two filaments: actin and myofilament. The actin filament is the primary contractile component of muscle fiber. Myofilaments are responsible for pulling the muscle fiber along its axis as it contracts. Actinomyosins are a family of proteins that are primarily found in muscle fibers (e.g., skeletal, cardiac). They possess two domains - one to form filaments and another to facilitate attachment of actin and myofilament. Myofilin is a type of actin protein. It is responsible for linking the actin filament with other actin molecules. Actinotipin is an enzyme that binds to the actin and myofibrillar proteins in muscle fibers and activates a series of post-translational modifications on actin, which leads to the formation of new filaments by activation of myofilaminase. This process results in the synthesis of multiple actin filaments. Myosin is an ATP-dependent protein that performs ATP hydrolysis and forms monomeric myofibrils (filaments) by binding to actin and myofilament proteins. It also promotes myofilaments to attach to muscle fiber membrane, form myosin motors, and generate contractility. The study of the structure and function of myofilins is essential for understanding muscle physiology and disease.
