Definition: Sanjay Kapur, also known by his stage name, "Nityanand", is an Indian actor, director, producer and film director who has been active in acting and directing films for over 30 years. He first gained prominence with his role in the film "Duniya" (1978) where he starred alongside Ashutosh Gowariker and became a household name.
Nityanand is best known for his portrayal of Ram Charan, who was born from his father's side, which has created a cult following among fans. He also appeared in films like "Sarang" (1986), "Jeevya" (1987) and "Kucham Jyoti" (1990).
His career took off when he became the first person to be cast in an Indian film featuring a Muslim actor. This was seen as a significant achievement, given that Muslim actors were rarely featured on screen before.
Nityanand's role in "Sarang" earned him his first National Film Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He has also received several other awards such as the CineMAA award and a Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship.
In addition to acting, Nityanand is also involved in directing and producing films, most notably "Jeevya" which he co-produced with Ashutosh Gowariker. He has directed films including "Sangharsh", "Vishwajit", and "Aapka Suraksha".
Nityanand was born on September 25, 1945, in Mumbai, India, but grew up in the United States due to his father's career as a film producer. He is married to actress Jyoti Dutt and has two children.
