Definition: Abidjan is a city located in central West Africa, on the coast of West African country Côte d’Ivoire. It's also known as "Abidian" or "Cité Abi". The name "Abidjan" means "abandoned city", but in this context it may mean a place where something has been abandoned and forgotten. The word 'Abidjan' is derived from the French word 'Abidjana', which itself comes from the Arabic, and in turn from the Egyptian 'Abdeljadda' (meaning 'land of Abolafia'). The name 'Abidjan' means a city that has been abandoned or forgotten. It can also refer to the historical name of the capital city of Côte d’Ivoire, which is Kédougou. In addition to being a place where something has been abandoned and forgotten, Abidjan is often used in colloquial English to mean "a place that's been forgotten", "an abandoned or forgotten place" or "a lost cause".
