Definition: The word 'Abstead' means a place or dwelling in England, where people who have been away from home for a long time would go to rest. An abstead has an old name in English. It came into use before the Norman Conquest in the 12th century. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was a place of lodging or residence for soldiers returning from wars. Today, many people still find Absteads to be places of rest on their way back home, although some people who have moved away now prefer to stay at hotels rather than absteads.
