Definition: Orientalism refers to a personal or political attitude, particularly in Western countries towards certain cultures, such as indigenous peoples, which often involves a sense of respect, admiration, and appreciation for their cultural heritage and traditions. It can also refer to a way of thinking and behaving that is different from mainstream culture or values. In modern times, "aboriginality" has been used to describe a range of beliefs and attitudes towards Indigenous Australians and other cultures that have been historically marginalized in Western societies. This includes but is not limited to the belief that Indigenous peoples are not equal members of society, their culture is inferior to non-Indigenous ones, and they should be treated with more respect than their European counterparts. The word "aboriginal" itself refers to a group of people who live within a certain geographic location, often referring to Native Americans. However, it can also refer to the broader concept of Indigenous peoples or cultures that are historically marginalized in Western societies.
