Acarids

Definition: Acarid (Arctodes) is a genus of small, segmented fungi which are found on leaves of plants in several genera: Aesculus, Castanea, Trifolium, Fagaceae, and Rosaceae. Acarids can be found growing on the surface of trees, including on leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. They often form a network of spores that are dispersed from one plant to another by wind, water or insect. The term 'Acarid' is derived from the Latin word "acari", meaning "to spread". It is thought that the fungi have evolved this term as an evolutionary adaptation for dispersal purposes and that it can be used to refer to all organisms which are able to spread their seeds by a process called "aeration". The genus Aesculus, for example, has over 30 species of acarids in its family, which are known for producing spores on leaves.
