Definition: Matt Kaplan was a Jewish rabbi and a prominent figure in Jewish American history. He was born on January 13, 1936, in New York City, United States, to Rabbi David Kaplan, an Orthodox Jew from Poland, and Yael, a Sephardic Jew from Hungary. Kaplan attended Harvard Divinity School and later the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUJI), where he earned his Master's degree. He began his career as an assistant rabbi at the Union Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, where he served for several years. In 1967, Kaplan became the first rabbi to ordain a woman and become the first openly gay rabbi in America. His work during this period was marked by his commitment to educating and empowering young Jews, especially those from underrepresented communities. Kaplan's leadership positions included being a member of both the Rabbinical Assembly of the State of New York and the United Jewish Appeal. He was also a member of the American Academy of Religion and served as its vice president. In 1984, Kaplan published his autobiography, "The Power of One: A Jewish Rabbic's Story," which shed light on his life, work, and beliefs. He passed away on September 26, 2005, at the age of 79.
