In 1967, Kaplan became the first rabbi to ordain a woman and become the first openly gay rabbi in America. Kaplan's leadership positions included being a member of both the Rabbinical Assembly of the State of New York and the United Jewish Appeal. He was also a member of the American Academy of Religion and served as its vice president.
