Definition: Shortcake is a sweet treat typically consisting of a cake with frosting. Shortcakes are often made with shortbread cookies or pate as their base, topped with whipped cream, and decorated with sprinkles, chocolate ganache, or other toppings. The word was coined in 1873 by the American cook, Henry Heston, after his daughter-in-law's fondness of a shortcake dessert when she visited her family in France.
